IITJEE: How To Prepare for it

IIT JEE is undoubtedly one of the toughest and most competitive exams in the world. With an increasing no of candidates appearing every year for just around ten thousand seats, and the mutating exam pattern have made it even more gruel some in the past few years.

The exam consists of two papers each of three hours duration having questions from all the three subjects with equal weightage. It is a very commonly known fact that you don’t get run of the mill stuff in JEE. The questions may seem less in number as compared to other engineering entrances, but they are so framed that they test the candidate’s analytical ability, accuracy, comprehension and concept all at the same time. Many people take the objective pattern for granted thinking that mere guesswork would get them through and so many of them end up getting negative scores. In our own times, teachers used to joke that you should recheck your answer if you get in your first attempt.

Now, we have bits of advice based on our own experiences for people who are interested in reading this further.

There is a great difference between your class X board exams and this level of competitive study. There is a lot of stress laid on analytical ability and mathematical skills. And as matter of fact the paper is such that attempting 40 % of it correctly gets you through. Don’t take it the other way, guys. It’s not a child’s play. A considerable number of people get negative marks also!

With so many coaching institutes springing up here and there and the number of medical students declining every year, the competition is rising exponentially and the number of seats is not increasing at the same rate. Around forty people compete for one seat, but if you actually consider the conventional branches in the seven premier IITs the ratio becomes 1:100. Now this is not to discourage you people but only to emphasise on the seriousness of the subject.

Now the question arises, what is exactly needed to scale Mt. JEE – loads of intelligence, hours and hours of study, accuracy..?

PASSION – is the keyword. Inveterate passion is what would sail you through. The rest are all by products. You need to eat IIT, sleep IIT, drink IIT. Put your heart and soul into it. Imagine what getting into IIT would give you. Respect, fame, money, all round development and what not. Go ahead ...dream big....build castles in the air...no harm..but don’t forget to put foundations under them. Success is the result of spontaneous combustion...you need to put yourself on fire. Nothing splendid was ever achieved in cold blood. Heat is needed to forge anything. Behind every great achievement there is a story of a flaming heart...

Remember your performance in your class X board exams is not a measure of how well you would do in your competitive exams. You start afresh in class XI. Joining a coaching institute is always useful no matter what people say about “self study”. It not only helps you to comprehend your subjects better but also provides a competitive environment with regular mock tests to tell you where you stand and where you need to work harder. Now don’t go for the new upcoming ones. You should not put your career at stake. It’s always better to be in the old reputed ones where there is plenty of “junta” studying and the past records are also creditable.

As mentioned earlier, there is a great difference between what you study in class X and your competitive study in class XI. Initially you would find things tougher. Problems won’t crack as easily as they used to in the previous classes. That’s normal. Nothing to worry. You’d get used to it with practice.
To begin with, calculus is an important part of the whole syllabus so learning the basic tricks of differentiation, integration and maxima- minima would prove to be useful in the long run. Trigonometric formulae should also be covered and a revision of your class IX and X geometry would be helpful in solving many problems of trigonometry as well as coordinate geometry.

In physics, kinematics should give you an idea of what level of problems you would be facing and we reckon addition and subtraction of vectors should be studied separately.
Stoichiometry and chemical bonding are always the best topics to begin with in chemistry as some parts of them have already been covered in the previous classes.

I would advise you all not to ignore your coaching study material as most people do. Remember it is compiled by people who are professionals and they know a lot more about what is necessary than any of you do at your present stage.

And yes remember practice is what can make the most difficult of topics the easiest. When you actually “fight“ with a question and spend time on it you learn the maximum. A very famous scientist said that by not succeeding in cracking a problem I learn about ten thousand ways of not doing it. It really works, believe me...helps in improving your mathematical aptitude.
And talking of mathematical aptitude, I hasten to mention that you won’t find any repetition of questions in JEE. Each question is framed by the IIT faculty and you won’t find them anywhere else before the exam. So your mathematical aptitude will decide how well you attempt the paper. And solving the previous years’ papers would just give you an idea of the level and type of questions. So no use mugging up stuff as in the other exams.

To conclude I would like to say that every one of you who is serious about getting in there should make best use of your time and opportunity and not leave any stone unturned while preparing because later you don’t have any option but to curse yourself with loads of guilt and remorse.
There is so much to say on this topic that everything cannot be mentioned here. However, we will be discussing this throughout on the discussion forum and if you guys have any doubts or queries or you feel that there is anything that you wan’t to share with us you are most welcome. We will try our level best to give you correct and authentic advice.

ALL THE BEST......
USE YOUR TIME WELL...
