'Super 30' opposes changes in IIT-JEE

Government's suggestion for bringing changes in IIT-Joint Entrance Examination by putting more emphasis on aptitude test has been opposed by 'Super 30', an organisation providing free coaching to rural youths to crack the entrance.

Anand Kumar, founder of 'Super 30' initiative, today said such changes will facilitate growth of coaching institutes in the country.

HRD Ministry has set up a four-member committee, headed by IIT Kharagpur director Prof Damodar Acharya, to suggest changes in the IIT-JEE to explore possibility of having one exam in place of the present IIT-JEE, AIEEE and state JEEs for admission into engineering stream.

The Terms Of Reference (TOR) issued by the ministry has said that the committee will suggest how due weightage would be given to performance of students in board exams and the entrance exam. The revised test should consist of an aptitude test to gauge the raw intelligence of students, the TOR said.

"The aptitude test will place students from rural India at a disadvantage position vis-a vis their urban counterparts. This will also lead to flourishing of private coaching classes instead of minimising it," Kumar said.
He said he has written to Acharya on this issue and requested him not to suggest inclusion aptitude test in the revised JEE format.

Kumar has supported the concept of a common test in place of IIT-JEE, AIEEE and state JEEs.
"This will distress the students from multiple exams and also lead to an integrated admission process," he said.
The government panel is expected to submit its report next month.

The Super 30 initiative will increase its intake from 30 to 60 from the coming year and admit students from all states.

The states of Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh are ready start tests to find out potential students from rural areas and send them to Super 30 for coaching, he said.

Kumar had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February and suggested the number of attempts should be increased from two to three for students of rural areas as they are invariably late starters.
