Stay on IITJEE 2010 Results...

The Delhi High Court has admitted a public interest litigation of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that has sought stay on the declaration of result of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) entrance exam held April 11.

Raising the issue of errors in the instructions for examinees who took the IIT joint entrance examination (IIT-JEE) in Hindi, the NGO, Satya Foundation, filed the public interest litigation (PIL) on April 25, which was heard Thursday.

Chetan Upadhyaya, secretary and counsel of Satya Foundation, Thursday submitted before the court a list of serious blunders in the IIT JEE-2010 and said that instead of accepting the faults and re-conducting the examination, the Joint Admission Board was trying to cover up the issue with “corrective measures” which are “totally illogical and can’t be digested by anybody”.

The IIT-JEE board evolved corrective measures May 2 to ensure that genuine candidates were not affected by the examination errors. It formulated a point-by-point remedial action and posted the same on the IIT-JEE website May 2, it said.

But the petitioner demanded an interim stay on the publication of results till the pendency of the petition and also that the examination be reconducted.

The two-judge bench of Acting Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Ms. Justice Mukta Gupta, admitting the petition clubbed it along with the earlier petition filed by Rajeev Kumar, a professor at IIT Kharagpur through his legal counsel Prashant Bhushan April 7 for overall transparency in the IIT-JEE system.

Both the PILs will be heared before the court May 19.

The results of IIT-JEE-2010 are expected to be declared by May 26.

Chetan Upadhyaya expressed his strong disagreement before the court for clubbing the two PILs.

“These are two different issues, my PIL is about errors in the Hindi version of question paper of the IIT-JEE 2010 while Dr Rajeev Kumar’s PIL is about overall transparency in the IIT,” Upadhyaya said.

Anand Kumar, director-cum-founder of Super 30, told IANS over phone from Patna that the corrective steps taken up by the IIT-JEE could not bring justice to the Hindi medium student.

“The corrective measures taken by IIT-JEE can in no way provide justice to the students who opted for the Hindi medium question paper. The only solution is to re-conduct the examination,” Anand Kumar told IANS.

Chetan Upadhyaya said he has full faith in the judiciary and justice will be done.

“I have full faith in the judiciary, I am sure the court will do justice to the thousands of Hindi medium students in the next hearing May 19,” Upadhyaya told IANS.

Kapil Sibal takes up IIT Madras director on JEE errors

HRD minister Kapil Sibal is believed to have pulled up MS Ananth, director of IIT Madras, for the mistakes in the recent Joint Entrance Examination taken by 4.45 lakh students.

Sources said Sibal asked Ananth, who met him on Monday, as to how such mistakes took place in a prestigious entrance examination for IITs and other premier engineering institutions. Sibal is believed to have asked IIT directors to ensure students do not suffer.

Ananth, who was accompanied by Gautam Barua, director, IIT of Guwahati, told Sibal that a statement would be put on IIT-JEE website on May 2 explaining steps that have been taken to deal with the mistakes. "Re-examination has been ruled out since no question was not leaked," a senior official said.

IITJEE 2010 Paper Analysis and Discussions

Around 4.5 lakh students appeared for IITJEE 2010 entrance exam all over the nation. There were some major changes in the pattern of the examination.

Change in Pattern

Change of pattern of exam is very important to select the good talent. The change in pattern of the exam brings unpredictability and students who can think on the fly and has good IQ perform better as compared to those who slog a lot.

In last few years equal weightages were given to paper-1 and paper-2 but this year the trend has been broken. Paper-1 was for 252 marks where as paper-2 was only 237 marks with physics, chemistry and mathematics combined together. Also in paper-1,there were more number of questions as compared to that in paper-2. Paper-1 had 84 questions in all whereas paper-2 had only 57 questions. It means paper-1 had 47% more questions than paper-1. Why IIT would have done this? This might be because of the reason that generally students get tired in paper-2 and find it difficult to perform up to their abilities.

Another change was the partial marking in more than one choice correct type of questions. It was never there in IIT but this year you can get marks even if you could not tick all correct choices.

Difficulty Level

Mathematics :

Mathematics paper was definitely trickier and tougher than last year papers especially paper-2. It was little more difficult to score this time.

In paper-1 there were 28 questions as compared to 20 questions in JEE 2009. With same level of questions it was expected to solve 50% more number of questions. Many students were surprised and got confused when they saw 28 questions to be done in 1 hour. Students who spent more time in trying questions lost their productive time and had to leave those which they could have done correctly.

Paper-2 though had less number of questions compared to paper-1 but was equally or more difficult to score. The questions were not straight forward and had lots of calculation steps. The students who could pick the average level questions would perform better than others. There is no change in number of questions as compared to JEE 2009 paper-2.

Analysis: So overall I would rate mathematics little difficult to score as compared to last year. So average score should fall due to this. Some counter effect would come from more than one correct type of questions where partial parking was introduced for the first time.

Chemistry :

In Chemistry paper – 1 and 2, some of the questions were very easy and straight forward (especially Physical Chemistry). Organic Chemistry questions were also straight forward with a moderate degree of difficulty but still easier as compared to last year exam.

Inorganic chemistry was in a totally different format as compared to last year. The paper didn’t require the mugging of inorganic reactions but the questions were much more factual and most of them were based on qualitative aspect of Inorganic chemistry.

In paper – 2, there were only 2 match the columns questions as compared to 4 last year exam. Also, the single answer questions and link comprehension questions were easier with a moderate difficulty in Subjective questions.

Since there were more questions (unexpected) in the paper – 1 but lesser difficulty level along with some vagueness in the questions and partial marking in multiple answer questions, Chemistry is roughly at the same level (in terms of scores) as compared to last year.

Physics :

Since the paper – 1 had more questions than the last year, this should obviously decrease the individual score in Physics. In Paper – 2, the number of questions were same.

Overall, the difficulty level may be assumed to be slightly on higher side. Also, the paper had more rigorous calculations requirement relative to last year.

Paper – 2 level was roughly the same as compared to last year exam.
So, as per the analysis, scoring in Physics paper would be little less as compared to last year.

IIT - JEE EXTENDED MERIT LIST (EML) Colleges

IITJEE  also provides JEE  Extended Merit list (JEE EML) with the common merit list of students. This list is not the waiting list for admission in any IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad.

This list is only meant for admission in few research oriented new Engineering colleges.
The scope in these colleges are not good, There is no link between these colleges and IIT.
So, by taking admission in these colleges on basis of JEE  Extended Merit list (EML) will not help you to get good carrier in Engineering field. It will be better to opt for NIT on the AIEEE rank.

The Candidates appearing in the EML are not eligible for admission into IITs, IT-BHU, and ISMU, and will not be called for counselling of JEE-2010.

The list of institutions that will be using the EML of JEE-2010 is given below. The list may be updated time to time.

IITJEE 2010 Minor Errors And Tricky Questions Left Students Worked Up

The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Test (IIT-JEE) that took place on Sunday left many students worked up due to difficult mathematics questions as well as minor errors in the question paper.

Many students complained that the mathematics questions in the paper were not only difficult and lengthy but were also much above the level of math taught by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Another thing that got students anxious was the mismatched order of sections in the question paper and the OMR answer sheet. Due to the printing error, the subject heads of mathematics and physics were interchanged in the question paper and the answer sheet.

What added to the complications was that all three subjects, namely, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics had exactly 28 questions. The IIT authorities realized the error as students throughout the country complained of it and advised them to ignore the subject headings and answer according to the serial numbers, which were the same in thequestion paper and the answer sheet.

Students who gave the Hindi version of Paper I of the test complained that a question in one of the 10 codes was not printed.

An official statement was later released by JEE authorities that the students would not be made to suffer for the errors in the paper.

The Director of IIT-Delhi, Mr. Surendra Prasad said, "Apart from these minor error, the examination passed off smoothly and there were no other complaints."
